Program Note:
Andromeda seeks to illustrate the Andromeda Galaxy, a glittering galaxy blanketed by a universe of cascading celestial clusters and sparkling stars depicted by the soft hum of tuned wine glasses, bowed vibraphone, and twinkling glockenspiel, crotales, and celeste.
Although the piece opens with a shimmering, silvery layer of upper violin harmonics and piano harp harmonics, the piece eventually blooms into a thicker texture characterized by falling brass glissandos, winding woodwind runs, striking glockenspiel, and chaotic crotales that seek to depict the trillions of intertwining stars, gas, and dark matter that compose the galactic core of the Andromeda Galaxy.
The piece finishes with the solemn hum of wine glasses and bowed vibraphone and the gentle echo of a pianissimo harp motif leaving listeners with an atmosphere of silent awe and wonder.
