Drifting Zephyrs (2020)

Performer: Austin Symphony Orchestra (TBD)

Instrumentation: Full Symphony Orchestra

Program Note:

Drifting Zephyrs (2020) is inspired by the sea breezes I experienced while overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The piece starts out with light, airy string harmonics to represent the refreshing winds. Unexpected interruptions throughout this section reflect the slight stings from windchill and sudden gusts. Although the piece begins with a quiet, serene section, Drifting Zephyrs blossoms into springing feathered-beam passages and sharp snap pizzicatos. Meanwhile, the strings play rippling, wave-like arpeggios to represent the undulating waves of the Pacific Ocean. The piece eventually develops into a massive tutti section with the entire orchestra playing the main melodic theme to represent the gentle zephyrs drifting into overpowering gales.
